In what way does drawing allow the artist who crosses a paper surface to confront the limits of his own body? How does drawing allow a singular apprehension of the material support on which it fits and beyond, of the space in which the act of drawing unfolds?
This course explores the place of the body and its relationship to the paper medium in the act of drawing through the notions of strength and limit. The boundary as a contour, as a delimitation of a space, of the space of the body, of the space between the bodies. The limit as the end of a gesture (the farthest point possible) but also the limit as the point of exhaustion of a |
material (paper support) or of a force, of an energy (that of the moving body)… This will allow us to explore the question of the power of the gesture, of the force mobilized in the act of drawing, drawing.
The workshop presents itself as a laboratory of experiments which, in the course of the proposed exercises, makes it possible to become aware of the multiple physical capacities of the body (proprioception, tonicity, force, explosivity, amplitude, repetition, resistance, etc.) to produce a tracing action. It also makes it possible to understand the extent of the physical properties of the paper backing (texture, ductility, strength, resilience of the material, etc.) and to see how the very act of tracing can question the properties of this medium by mobilizing its physical forces (traction, friction, torsion, compression, piercing, etc.).
The plots made are thus a reflection not only of the very singular character of each individual’s body but also of the way in which each one explores his own bodily limits and those of the drawn support.
By putting the whole body back at the centre of the drawing experience, this course questions particularly the performative dimension of the act of drawing and makes it possible to wonder how action, drawing and result work together. It aims to make the participants aware that where the drawing actually occurs, it is in this space which unfolds between the sensitive body in action and the paper support which, just as much as the body, may be considered as a sensitive surface. |
Content :
Through a series of exercises, this course proposes an exploration of the question of gesture in relation to the paper medium, but also of a more extensive involvement of the body in the artistic act around the notions of strength and limit.
- Paper, a sensitive surface
- Support and body - a close encounter
- Body limits and gesture radiation
- Engaged body - between strength and exhaustion of gesture
Workshop lasting 12 hours, due to 4 sessions of 3 hours. Open to art students and all adult audiences, without artistic prerequisites.
